Apple Butter Festival expands for 2009;
event to be held Saturday, October 10

The old-timey apple butter “boilin’” remains the star attraction, but the 2009 Apple Butter Festival on Saturday, October 10, has some new features this year as well.
New for the youngsters is a hayride, along with an expanded schedule of kids’ activities. New for everyone is a bake sale, a “previously enjoyed” book sale, and the Almost New Shop holding a rare Saturday opening (the Bee Hive Gift Shop is open, too). Costumed participants from Civilians of Gettysburg will add to the festivities as well.
Back – by popular demand – are lots of crafts vendors, some of whom will demonstrate their skills at woodcarving, pottery and the like; lunchtime foods, plus ice cream and apple dumplings; soups for take-home purchase, antique engines, live music, and more.
The Replogle family will once again be operating the apple press and stirring the butter as it boils in iron pots over open fires, but this year their apple butter will be available for purchase from the outset – no more waiting until the batch on display is done.
The festival begins at 10:00 a.m. and runs until 2:00 p.m. Events will be held outside of Nicarry Meetinghouse, in the Meetinghouse, in the Courtyard, and in the Terrace Dining Room. Admission and parking are free.
This year’s event is a fundraiser for the Brethren Home Auxiliary, so proceeds will support its many projects including the Good Samaritan Fund, which helps Cross Keys residents who can no longer pay for their own care. For more information, call Gerry Graybill at 717-624-5981.
Cross Keys Village – The Brethren Home Community is located at the intersection of U.S. 30 and PA 94 (Cross Keys), less than two miles east of New Oxford’s town circle. Nicarry Meetinghouse is best accessed via the Route 30 entrance, which is at the northwest corner of the campus. Directional signage is available at other entrances. Ample free parking is available.
