Violin and organ to be featured in
March 29 Jardine concert
Violinist Venona Detrick will join organist Shirley King for a free, public performance on Sunday, March 29, at 2:00 p.m. in Nicarry Meetinghouse at Cross Keys Village – The Brethren Home Community.
The performance will include J. S. Bach’s “Siciliano,” an arrangement of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” compositions by Fiocco, Paradis and Sanders, and “Hymn Preludes,” which brings together “Praise Ye, the Lord Almighty” and four other well-known hymns.
The concert is part of a series highlighting the rare, 140-year-old Jardine organ at Cross Keys. That instrument that has spent time on both coasts of the United States—it once belonged to the University of Washington. It was rebuilt and enlarged by Brunner and Heller in 1983 after being acquired by York Hospital and moved to the East Coast. It was given to Cross Keys Village – The Brethren Home Community in 1996 and moved into Nicarry Meetinghouse when that facility was built in 2000.
Detrick has her own violin studio and teaches in the Dallastown Area School District. She is a member of the York Symphony Orchestra, the Allegro Chamber Orchestra of Lancaster, and the string quarted “No Strings Attached.” She also performs with her husband, Joe, a guitarist, and their three children, all violinists. She is a Wichita State University graduate with a master’s in music education from Temple University.
King, who coordinates the Jardine Organ Series at Cross Keys, is Director of Advising at Dickinson College, and an adjunct faculty member in organ and harpsichord. She was an organ professor and recitalist in the Midwest, where she performed with the Wichita Symphony and other organizations. She serves on the executive board of the American Guild of Organists, New York-Pennsylvania chapter, and is organist at First Presbyterian Church in Carlisle.
Cross Keys Village – The Brethren Home Community is located at the intersection of U.S. 30 and PA 94 (Cross Keys), less than two miles east of New Oxford’s town circle. Nicarry Meetinghouse is best accessed via the Route 30 entrance, which is at the northwest corner of the campus. Directional signage is available at other entrances. Ample free parking is available.
