Variety marks events in Fine Arts Concert Series for 2008

The Fine Arts Concert Series at Cross Keys Village -- The Brethren Home Community will bring a wide variety of entertainment to Nicarry Meetinghouse in 2008.

Vocal and instrumental performances are on the schedule for the free, public series, which opens on Saturday, March 8, with the vocal group Belle Voix. All the concerts are held on Saturdays, starting at 7 p.m.

Keyboardist Mick Cochran visits Cross Keys on April 19. Characterized as the busiest performer in the Harrisburg area -- he plays as many as 500 dates per year -- Cochran is a retired school band director who performs jazz and other musical styles.

On June 21, the Eaken Piano Trio will perform. This Grammy-nominated classical and semi-classical music group is now in its 20th year of performing and also is known for outreach efforts on behalf of the homeless.

Baritone Anthony Brown, who will perform September 27, also is known for outreach activities as well as musical ability. He is a true ambassador for peace, having toured in Bosnia, Northern Ireland, Uganda, China, Ethiopia, South Korea, and several nations of the former Soviet Union, including Russia. He sings spirituals, Broadway tunes, and more.

The Gettysburg College Children’s Choir will offer an entirely different sound on October 18. This auditioned group of treble-voiced singers aged 3 to 8 is directed by Gettysburg College Music Professor Sharon Gratto and accompanied by Jane Jones, a vocal music teacher in the Gettysburg elementary schools.

Barbershop music will fill the house on November 29 when the Red Rose City Chorus performs. As the name implies, this group represents Lancaster, but the 48 women in the chorus hail from at least five other counties, and they have been winning medals for their singing for nearly five years.

The final 2008 performance will be by the York Symphony Chamber Singers on December 20. For 26 years, “one of York’s musical treasures” has brought the finest in sacred and secular music to audiences from St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York to Longwood Gardens and the National Institutes of Health. Most selections are sung a cappella, and songs from America’s rich musical heritage are prominent.

The Fine Arts Concert Series is assembled each year by a committee of Cross Keys Villagers. Churches and other area groups assist with escorting those Health Care Center residents who need assistance. Seating is unreserved; some artists have CDs on sale after their performances.
