Memory Support

Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia pose unique challenges to those who suffer from these conditions … and to those who love and care for them.

If your loved one is struggling with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia or memory loss, you know the truly special care he or she requires and deserves. This is the care we provide on our Memory Support unit, known as Somerset. Recently renovated, Somerset feels warm, safe, and inviting to residents and their families, so that everyone feels connected and cared for.

Each member of the Somerset care-giving team is specially trained in working with people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia—and each works only in Somerset. This means that each one of us knows and cares for each person who lives here as an individual. Our person-centered approach helps us support your loved one’s comforting routines as well as gently introduce new and enjoyable activities that promote self-esteem and positive interactions.

Naturally, the safety of your loved one comes first. For this reason, Somerset remains a locked neighborhood, and residents must be under supervision during any visits outside the neighborhood. But within Somerset, our residents are free to walk around and visit with neighbors, visitors, and members of the care-giving team. And because life at Somerset centers on providing attentive, individualized care, this mobility feels more natural, more home-like, without the disruption of alarms.

We consider families an essential part of our care-giving team, and we encourage you to take part in neighborhood activities and services to the extent that you are able. We also invite you to participate in our Alzheimer’s support group, if you’d like, as well as to contact our social services team and the chaplains from our pastoral care team at any time.

Other ways Somerset provides warm, home-like care:

  • A staff-to-resident ratio of approximately 1:2 during the day enables us to provide individualized, person-centered care
  • Community life team coordinates and leads activities for residents, seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Full-service kitchen provides meals and snacks, filling the neighborhood with the comforting aromas of home cooking
  • Sunny central lounge serves as a central meeting place for meals and activities
  • Enclosed outdoor Sensory Garden provides a space for outdoor enjoyment and activities when weather permits
