Golden Anniversary Chicken Barbecue
to be held Saturday, August 21
The 50th Annual Chicken Barbecue, Car Show and Auction will be held on Saturday, Aug. 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cross Keys Village – The Brethren Home Community, at the intersection of routes 30 and 94 (Cross Keys), less than two miles east of the New Oxford town square.
Admission and parking are free, and a turnout of up to 5,000 people is expected.
Barbecue chicken meals ($8) will be available for on-site dining or take-out (drive-through pickup near the route 94 and Village Drive campus entrance), starting at 10:15 a.m. Kauffman's BBQ of Bethel will prepare the 2,500 chicken halves to be served.
Other food choices will include hamburgers and hot dogs, pork barbecue, French fries, homemade pie and ice cream.
The auction begins at 1 p.m. and features antiques, collectibles and beautiful handcrafted quilts. (An auction preview will be held on Friday, Aug. 20, from 5-7 p.m., as well as Saturday morning.) This year's unusual items include a quilt pieced by former resident Ethel Miller some years ago and quilted by the Cross Keys Quilters group.
The Classic Car Show (up to 1972 model year) will be staged in the Assisted Living parking lot and on the lawn between Assisted Living and U.S. 30. As many as 100 cars are expected. Registration is $10 per car, with trophies to be awarded for Best of Show. Call 717-624-6671 for registration information.
This year's line-up of live entertainment features the popular bluegrass-gospel band Set Free and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Ray Owen, as well as the Mechanicsburg Church of the Brethren Instrumental Ensemble, and Cross Keys' own Village Choir.
Other popular features return: craft vendors, the used book sale, bake sale, live music and more. Both the Bee Hive Gift Shop and the Almost New Shop will be open. The new village model railroad club will have a train layout operating.
Free shuttle buses will take attendees from the parking lots to the food, craft and car show areas, as well as Nicarry Meetinghouse for the auction. The Harmony Ridge West Apartments Welcome Center will be open to provide tours and information about the newest campus housing option.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Brethren Home Auxiliary, which supports the Good Samaritan Fund for charitable care, as well as various projects that benefit residents at Cross Keys.
